Nurturing Juniors' talent and passion for the game.
In terms of my approach to coaching in general, but specifically junior coaching, I take a holistic view – always making sure I’m bringing together technique work, skill development and performance based training/games. I feel strongly that my role is to nurture a junior’s interest. I want to challenge juniors and improve them, but it has to always be fun and am always thinking about ways to keep practice purposeful and engaging. I have a proven track record of taking juniors from beginners to county players.
In 2019 did the US kids golf certification as the learning materials and lesson structures work really well with younger kids.
JUNIOR GROUPS
I run two regular junior groups on Saturday. Each group holds a maximum of four children. This group size allows juniors to get more quality 1:1 time than conventional junior group lessons with lots of children attending.
The groups take place at two locations: The Essex Golf Room and North Weald par 3 course where we have access to the 300 yard long grass hitting area and the par 3 course itself. This gives variety to the lessons from week to week depending on weather conditions and that weeks lesson criteria.
I use the US Kids golf book and pin system, which is a great way for the children to chart their progress and motivates them to continue to learn and improve - a bit like the belt system in karate. I also run regular end of term tournaments and have a league running throughout the season to help them measure their progress and get a score card in their hand to prepare them for competitive golf in the future.
These groups are not a roll up class. Each child is signed up for a half term that runs during term time (typically 6 weeks) and there must be a minimum of 3 children in a class for it to go ahead for that half term. As there are only two groups of 4 children, places are limited and a waiting list is in operation for when a space becomes available.
